Pérdida de la audición en niños

¿Qué es?

Un niño con pérdida auditiva tiene problemas para oír sonidos dentro del rango del habla humana normal.

Más de 7 millones de niños sufren de pérdida de la audición, que puede presentarse en el nacimiento (congénita) o puede desarrollarse más tarde (adquirida). La pérdida de la audición afecta a 17 de cada 1.000 niños menores de 18 años. Es uno de los problemas congénitos más frecuentes en los recién nacidos, que afecta a unos de cada 650 bebés sanos. Es más frecuente en bebés que nacen con otros problemas de salud. Más del 90% son de padres que no padecen de problemas auditivos. Sin embargo, esta condición puede ser hereditaria, ya que entre el 5 y el 10% de los niños sordos tiene padres sordos.

El problema de la pérdida auditiva no se detecta hasta que el niño tiene 2, 3 o hasta 4 años de edad. Debido a que el período crítico del desarrollo del lenguaje comprende desde el nacimiento hasta los 3 años, no identificar la pérdida auditiva a una temprana edad puede tener consecuencias serias en el habla del niño.

Hay dos categorías principales:

  • Pérdida auditiva central: incluye problemas con el procesamiento de la información en el cerebro.
  • Pérdida de la audición periférica: se refiere a los problemas con las estructuras auditivas. La pérdida de la audición periférica se divide en tres tipos:
    • Pérdida auditiva de conducción: el tipo más frecuente en los niños, se presenta cuando se bloquea la transmisión del sonido a través del oído externo o medio. Esta condición puede ser temporal o permanente y puede presentarse en ambos oídos. Este tipo de pérdida auditiva es causado por anomalías físicas presentes desde el nacimiento. Comienza durante la niñez como resultado de infecciones en el oído medio (otitis media). Otras causas incluyen perforación del tímpano, tapón de cera u objetos en el canal auditivo.
    • Pérdida auditiva neurosensorial: está relacionada con la transmisión de información de sonido desde las células ciliadas ubicadas en el interior del oído hasta el nervio que envía información del sonido al cerebro.
    • Es una condición permanente que usualmente afecta a ambos oídos. La pérdida de la audición neurosensorial puede presentarse durante el nacimiento o manifestarse más tarde. La causas incluyen la exposición prolongada a sonidos fuertes, infecciónes (por ejemplo la meningitis bacteriana) lesiónes de la cabeza, medicamentos tóxicos y algunas enfermedad hereditarias extrañas.
    • Pérdida de la audición mixta: es un problema de conducción como neurosensorial.

La pérdida de la audición se mide en volumen de sonido que puede escucharse sin amplificación. Típicamente, se clasifica como limítrofe o leve, moderada, regular, seria o grave. El término ¨sordo” se aplica generalmente a una persona cuyo pérdida de la audición es tan amplia que no puede comunicarse con otra persona mediante la voz.
